Jing Xiu An
The strong spirit of Buddhism continues to remain in this world.
Although Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple is built with modern architecture and design, but it has over hundred year of history, it is one of the oldest temples in the country.
Prior to ‘Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple’, it was called ‘Jing Xiu An’, which was founded in 1902. Jing Xiu An was originally located at Peel Road of Kuala Lumpur. It started with farming activities for self-sustaining, and sharing dharma for the liberation of all as its main activity. The founder was Rev. Yuan Xun.
The second Abbess was Rev. Chi Jian who given the name Jing Xiu An. Jing Xiu An was originally a sanctuary meant for silent practice.
During that time of war, many people fled from China and left their homeland to seek refuge in Malaya, they went through hunger and difficult times.
Jing Xiu An which was located at Peel Road withholds the aspiration of benefiting the others. Those who have experienced sufferings had learned to be more humble and grateful.
The Old Masters
In 1957, Rev. Chi Jian led her followers and moved from Peel Road to the present site in Petaling Jaya, Old Town. At that time, the temple was a scanty building with zinc roof and wooden walls. Rev. Chi Jian continued farming for living while dedicating her time and effort to the poor and people in need.
The third Abbess, Rev. Chang Heng was an orphan in the custody of Jing Xiu An and lived with Rev. Chi Jian. As a child, she came in contact with Buddhism and this connection grew stronger through the years.
The second Abbess, Rev. Chi Jian passed on in the month of December 2003, at the age of 104. The superior Abbess mainly practiced the teachings of Medicine Buddha and often led her followers to offer prayers to the Medicine Buddha. Her piousness was often acknowledged and therefore she was greatly respected by her followers. Her selflessness and devoutness in helping others won good name for the temple and laid the foundation for Sau Seng Lum’s current achievements.
Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple
The year 1978 was a turning point in the history of Sau Seng Lum. Rev. Chi Jian decided to step down and handed over the post of Abbess to Rev. Chang Heng in that year.
Rev. Chang Heng is a person of great wisdom. Since young, she realized the impermanence of life. She went to Taiwan to further study in Buddhism and at the age of 18, Rev. Chang Heng was initiated into nun hood. Since then she has been dedicating herself to Buddhism.
Upon taking the role of new Abbess, Rev. Chang Heng began reconstructing the temple into a single-storey brick building.
With the consent of Rev. Chi Jian, Jing Xiu An was renamed Sau Seng Lum and set four missions as its objectives. The four missions are: perform charitable deeds, provide medical care, promote cultural activities and educational work.
White Robe Dragon Riding Guan Yin
In 1979, a 12-feet White Robe Dragon Riding Guan Yin was set up at the entrance of the temple, the Heart Sutra and the names of the Buddha were crafted at the back of the Guan Yin’s statue. All these are done by Rev. Chang Heng and the volunteers. The lotus pond was also built by them.
In the same year, Sau Seng Lum had invited Master Bo Yuan to perform the inauguration ceremony for this Guan Yin statue, it marked the beginning of Sau Seng Lum walking the way of bodhisattva in liberating all sentient beings from sufferings.
Dragon Riding Guan Yin Charitable Committee
Strong will and aspiration leads to great achievements. In 1986, the government approved Sau Seng Lum’s application to start welfare charity plan. The news brought encouragement to the devotees, increased their confidence and dedication towards a good cause.
In 1987, Sau Seng Lum set up a Dragon-riding Guan Yin Bodhisattva Charity Committee with the mission to carry out the teachings of the Buddha on compassion and equality, by offering support and liberate old folks, those who are ill, homeless and misfortunate from sufferings.
Expansion of Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple into double-storey building
In 1988, Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple was expanded into a double-story building to accommodate more devotees and members of the public to join in the activities in the temple.
Sau Seng Lum invited a few highly respected senior reverends to jointly preside over the ground-breaking ceremony for the reconstruction, including Master Sheng Yin, Master Ming Zhi, Master Bo Yuan, Master Ji Huang, and Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera.
The Jade Crafted Sakyamuni Buddha
The Jade crafted Sakyamuni Buddha statue was auspiciously stored in the year of 1989, it is still remain seated in the The Hall of the Jade Buddha. It stands 7-feet high and weighed 6 tons. Renowned Buddhist leader in the country, Master Kim Beng, Master Sheng Yin, Master Ming Zhi, Master Bo Yuan, Master Ji Huang and several other senior monks were invited to preside over the inauguration ceremony of the statue.
In the past, Sau Seng Lum had organised the Buddha bathing ceremony using this statue on every 15th of the 4th lunar month i.e. Wesak Day, in memory of the greatness of Buddha in inspiring many with his precious teachings.
Thousand Year Camphorwood Statue of Ksitigarbha
In the year of 1991, a 9-feet thousand year camphor wood made statue of Ksitigarbha was safely delivered and stored in the main hall of the temple. The profound spirit and perseverance of Ksitigarbha's vow of “Not Becoming Buddha Till The Hell Realm is Empty” has since become the tradition and yearly event in the month of July to hold the “Ullambana Puja” which attracts thousands of devotee to the grand practice.
Trinity of Huayan
In 1993, the temple was honored with three majestic statues of “The Trinity of Huayan" and Buddha relics from the Dharma King (Head of Monk) of Thailand. It was an auspicious event and marked the fruition of the dharma practice.
The Grand Hall
In 1994, Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple enshrined three Buddha statues in the Grand Hall. Sitting in the centre position is Śākyamuni Buddha, who educates all living beings for enlightenment. On the right is the Medicine Buddha, who saves the sick and suffering from disease, and on the left is the Amitabha Buddha, who extradites all sentient beings to the Western Paradise (Pure land)..
Sau Seng Lum Haemodialysis Centre
After three years of hard work, the committee of 9 devotees led by Rev. Chang Heng established the first non-profit haemodialysis centre in the Malaysian Buddhist community, to provide charity medical treatment to the needy patients in May 1994. The single-storey wooden haemodialysis centre, situated next to the Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple is now known as Sau Seng Lum Haemodialysis Centre, actively handles haemodialysis treatment applications for impoverished kidney disease patients of all ethnic groups. In 1996, the centre started to provide professional haemodialysis treatment service with 6 haemodialysis machines and actively promoted various welfare programmes.
Sau Seng Lum Loving Charity Card
In line with the purpose of "Give Life A Chance", Sau Seng Lum officially launched 10,000 Loving Charity Card on 9th January 1997. Application as a member is significant and the annual donation is only RM60.
Rev. Chang Heng hopes that through the card signup, more people will have the opportunity to cultivate love and compassion. In addition to raising long-term medical expenses and operating funds for haemodialysis unit, this card also provides long-term welfare benefits for dialysis patients, alleviates burden and provides educational opportunities for their children.
Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Haemodialysis
Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Haemodialysis was established on 23rd April 1998 to plan and implement more beneficial programmes for patients with kidney disease and source additional welfare benefits for them.
Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Haemodialysis Awarded Trust Deed foundation
In July 1999, Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Haemodialysis was awarded Trust Deed foundation by The Prime Minister Department.
Reconstruction of Sau Seng Lum Haemodialysis Centre
Due to the increasing number of impoverished kidney patients seeking help every year, the existing one-storey wooden haemodialysis centre was no longer sufficient. Sau Seng Lum Haemodialysis Centre started the reconstruction project in July 1999 and expanded to a double-storey concrete building.
Sau Seng Lum Newsletter
On 6th October 1999, Sau Seng Lum published its quarterly newsletter for free distribution to its devotees and public readers. Each issue was printed 100,000 copies. Through this newsletter, people from different places in the country can be updated on the information related to medical, cultural and other upcoming events in Sau Seng Lum.
In line with the changes of habits in reading, and in order to save on printing costs and to protect the environment, Sau Seng Lum has instead published the digital copy on its website for online reading by more people. This also enables the readers to obtain first-hand information online.
Thousands Arm & Thousands Eyes Guan Yin
During end of December 1999, a brass statue of Guan Yin (Great Compassion) Bodhisattva with thousand arms and thousand eyes was transported from China to the temple. The magnificent statue stands 10-feet high and weighs 2 ½ tons, it was designed and crafted by a renowned sculptor in China.
On 25th January 2000, Master Bo Yuan was invited to perform the inauguration ceremony, it was graced by the chanting of thousand devotees led by the renowned masters and monks.
Double-storey Concrete Building Sau Seng Lum Haemodialysis Centre
The new double-storey concrete building of the Sau Seng Lum Haemodialysis Centre was officially put into service in November 2000 to provide haemodialysis treatment for more underprivileged kidney patients.
Sau Seng Lum (PJ) Stroke Rehabilitation Centre
Stroke brings so much harm to the health and life of the people, and it causes tremendous sufferings and burden to the patients, family and society.
Sau Seng Lum had long realized the after effects and sufferings caused by stroke. It opened a Dialysis and Stroke Rehabilitation Centre on 2nd January 2001 to provide professional services and supports to stoke patients undergoing rehabilitation despite their religions and race.
In line with the advancement in medical skills and techniques, the centre has a big transformation in the year of 2010, it switched from traditional acupuncture to the application of western medical equipment which included LOKOMAT and ARMEO.
Construction of Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre
The construction of the 4-storey Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre covering an area of 100,000 square feet started on 15th March 2001. The piling work has completed in May, and the construction work began in August.
Opening Ceremony of Sau Seng Lum Haemodialysis Centre
Celebrating the 99th anniversary of the founding of Sau Seng Lum and the opening of the newly double-storey haemodialysis centre, Sau Seng Lum organized the Charity Fund Raising which consisted of charity run, charity sales, and charity concert on 18th March 2001. The grand opening ceremony event attracted more than 20,000 enthusiastic people from all over the country to jointly raise funds for Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Haemodialysis.
Loving Charity Health Campaign
“Prevention is Better Than Cure” is the basic concept of illnesses. Most illnesses do present the symptoms in the early stage, if diagnosis and treatment can be done earlier, it will reduce the burden on heavy medical costs. In view of this, Sau Seng Lum started to promote free health check and consultation, to cultivate the awareness of public with regards to health.
With the help of the volunteer team, Sau Seng Lum conducts health screening or health talks in the auditoriums of various towns and villages every month. The health screening includes blood test, blood pressure, cholesterol, bone examination and etc.
Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Strok Dan Pembangunan Masyarakat
Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Strok Dan Pembangunan Masyarakat was established on 15th April 2002 to provide long-term medical benefits to patients.
Sau Seng Lum Puchong Exhibition Centre
Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Exhibition Centre was founded on 6th April 2003 based on the principles of cultural and education. It became popular ever since its opening and attracted many visitors. One of its unique attractions is it has collection of 500 Arhats statues, which made it the first Exhibition Centre to exhibit 500 ceramic made Arhat statues in Malaysia.
Sau Seng Lum Loving Charity Mobile Clinic
To further induce public awareness on the importance of health consciousness and that “Prevention is Better Than Cure”, Rev. Chang Heng has introduced and launched Sau Seng Lum Loving Charity Mobile Clinic on 28th November 2004.
This Mobile Clinic looks like a bus, but it equipped with medical aids and services to provide free chinese medical consultations to residents in the Klang Valley. This has enable the poor income group of people to receive earlier diagnosis and treatment and prevent them from facing severe illnesses.
Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre
In order to provide a more complete treatment services to the patients, Rev. Chang Heng decided to expand the medical services of Sau Seng Lum Stroke Rehabilitation Centre to Puchong. The 4-storey building occupies a land area of 100,000 square feet and started its operation on 1st January 2005, it has a team of healthcare professional medical to provide a better and comprehensive treatment services.
The centre has introduced and made available a wide range of other services such as stroke rehabilitation, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, sports injury and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, work rehabilitation and neurology rehabilitation.
Sau Seng Lum Traditional Chinese Medicine Department
Sau Seng Lum Traditional Chinese Medicine Department established on the third floor of Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre, and staffed by professional Chinese physicians, was officially put into service to benefit the public on 2nd July 2005.
Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and The Source of Living Water
Entering 2006, Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple has created new attractions, including the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva statue that shows contemplating at ease and encourages people to see everything openly to achieve perfect ease and "The Source of Living Water" encourages people to keep the compassion flowing in their hearts all the time. Always keep a normal attitude and be thankful to the elements in dealing with the good times and adversities.
Jing Xiu Xuan Tea Room
On opening the wooden door at the entrance, you will immediately feel transported to a Zen-inspired traditional tea room. The first thing that catches the eye is the simple yet detailed features of its interior with a superb view of the garden water feature. Hanging filtered lights through thick rice paper give soft luster, creating a complete harmonized, meditative ambience to the tea room while the Buddha statues offer feeling of calmness and serenity. Close inspection of the tea room reveals that its architecture is based on wood- a respect for nature.
Jing Xiu Xuan Tea Room was officially opened on 8th April. The fragrance of Chinese herbal tea and the burning incense allows all devotees who visit the temple to have a corner to enjoy tea, relax and seek inner peace of mind.
Lingjiu Garden
Entering 2007, Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple has created a new scenic spot, the Lingjiu Garden presented in a leisure courtyard way. The scenery of the small bridge, the flowing water, and the courtyard was beautiful, and the sound of the gurgling stream transmitted through the Lapis Lazuli Cave where 108 statues of Medicine Buddha are enshrined.
Jade Stone Reclining Buddha
Since February 2007, a large-scale Reclining Buddha made of jade sculpture and imported from Myanmar, weighing about 35 tons, 7 feet high, and 25 feet long was enshrined in the Reclining Buddha Hall of Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple. In conjunction with the 105th anniversary of the founding of Sau Seng Lum, the Consecration Ceremony of the Reclining Buddha was held on 14th April 2007.
Buddhas of the Five Directions, 33 Goddess of Mercy
Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Exhibition Centre enshrined The Buddhas of the Five Directions and 33 Goddess of Mercy.
Relocation of Sau Seng Lum (PJ) Stroke Rehabilitation Centre
Sau Seng Lum (PJ) Stroke Rehabilitation Centre relocated to the opposite side of the former site in 2008, renamed Yayasan Kebajikan SSL Strok Dan Pembangunan Masyarakat, and renovated to accommodate and benefit more patients through more comprehensive and improved treatment. The rehabilitation centre can accommodate more patients and provides a more spacious and comfortable environment with medical facilities.
Ten Great Disciples of Buddha
In 2008, the Ten Great Disciples of Buddha stood at the entrance of the Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Exhibition Centre. The solemn Dharma statue is awe-inspiring, the demeanor of the Great Enlightened One has flowed in the breeze blowing in the willows, and the magnificence of the ancient Dharma has transmitted in the corresponding distant lake.
Jing Xiu An Memorial Museum
Jing Xiu An is the birthplace of Sau Seng Lum. Sau Seng Lum’s achievements today are attributable to Rev. Chang Heng’s vow to her late Master Chi Jian’s wish, in fulfilling her aspirations progressively. In expressing gratitude and memory towards the late Master, Rev. Chang Heng created this museum in 2008, using wall cabinets to showcase the variety of century-old artifacts which give visitors a unique experience to rewind the history of Sau Seng Lum with a peep through its glass cases.
Mobile Medical Services For Community (Home Visits by Chinese Medical Practitioners)
Most of the stroke patients are unable to go to the rehabilitation centre on their own. In order to provide friendly support to them, the centre has started to provide home visit since 2009. Healthcare professionals and volunteers go door to door to provide treatment services and deliver medicines to the patients.
Apart from these, it has also provided charitable offerings to the poor by sending them the basic necessities such as rice, cooking oil, salt and food.
For those who require support of the medical equipment, the centre will also make arrangement and send them to the rehabilitation centre in Puchong to receive their treatment. This group of misfortune people is supported by the charity fund of Sau Seng Lum in receiving free medical treatment.
Work Rehabilitation Department
In 2010, Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre established the Work Rehabilitation Department on the ground floor to provide rehabilitation treatment, pre-occupational assessment, vocational adaptability training, occupational injury prevention guidance, employment reassessment, and counselling services for work-related injury patients.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Treatment Unit
Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre set up the Sau Seng Lum TCM Treatment Unit on 1st January 2010. With the addition of TCM services, this unit provides stroke treatment through the combination of Chinese and Western approaches.
Sau Seng Lum (PJ) Paediatric Rehabilitation Centre
Sau Seng Lum (PJ) Paediatric Rehabilitation Centre equipped with the Multisensory Room and Sensory Integration Room was officially put into service on 15th May 2010, to assist more special needs children in need to receive various professional rehabilitation treatments and training, especially those from needy families.
Sau Seng Lum Inner Bliss Sanctuary
From the biological point of view, illnesses are caused by imbalances of energy within the body. Happiness, love and peace are vital to promote the balance in energy. The ground breaking ceremony was conducted on 1st January 2011 to build a sanctuary filled with positive energy.
Earth Store Bell
Sau Seng Lum installed the Earth Store Bell in 2011. The Earth Store Bell is inscribed with Kṣitigarbha-bodhisattva-pūrva-praṇidhāna Sūtra or Sutra of the Fundamental Vows of the Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha.
The sutra describes the journey of birth, old age, sickness and death that each and every sentient beings has to go through and tells of how Kṣitigarbha became a bodhisattva by making great vows to rescue other sentient beings. It is also mentioned in the Sutra that one can gain twenty eight benefits by listening, chanting, worshiping, praising, or salutation to the Sutra. The Sutra also expounds at length the retributions of unwholesome karma, descriptions of hells and the benefits of good merit both great and small.
Opening Ceremony of Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Paediatric Rehabilitation Department
A group of 13 members from the Welfare Association of the Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (BAKTI) visited Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre on 8th February 2011. Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor (the president and wife of the Prime Minister) officiated the opening ceremony of Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Paediatric Rehabilitation Department.
The Grand Hall: Myanmar Jade Buddha Statue
In 2011, the Grand Hall of Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple enshrined three statues made of Myanmar jade, including Śākyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha. The existing three Buddha statues were relocated to Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Exhibition Centre for the convenience of more tourists and local devotees to worship Buddha.
9.9 meter of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva statue stands solemnly at a height of 9.9 meters inside the Sau Seng Lum temple. This bronze statue was custom-made at Jiuhua Mountain in China and it took the local skilled craftsmen three years to finally complete the statue before it was able to be shipped to the temple.
On 13th July 2011, this 30 feet magnificent Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva statue was initiated. Rev. Chang Heng vowed to hold a month-long Ullambana Puja each and every year. In the blink of an eye, thirty years have gone by since. It is with the hope that more people will follow the teachings of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva to make great vows to rescue other sentient beings, to worship with sincerity and to respect Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva.
Opening Ceremony of Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis & Stroke Rehabilitation Centre
On 22nd October 2011, witnessed by more than 800 guests and accompanied by President of Sau Seng Lum, Rev. Chang Heng, Vice President Mr. Wong Peng Wah, YB Teresa Kok Suh Sim (Selangor Senior State Councilor and Member of Parliament), Puan Rodziah Bt. Ismail (Selangor Govt Exco Member), Gobind Singh (Member of Parliament Puchong), Dr. Roslan (Director of Health, Subang Jaya Municipal Council) and other guests, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Abdul Khalid bin Ibrahim (Menteri Besar of Selangor) officiated the grand opening ceremony of Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Dialysis and Stroke Rehabilitation Centre. After the ribbon cutting opening ceremony of the centre, he sent his warmest regards to the patients during his visit to each department.
Sau Seng Lum World Children Care Foundation (Share Share Love)
Sau Seng Lum has launched the Sau Seng Lum World Children Care Foundation on 24th May 2013 in order to support the unfortunate children. The fund raised is used to provide education opportunities, medical services and better environment to the children.
This foundation was launched during a gala dinner on 8th Febuary 2014, which the YB Dato’ Teng Chang Khim, renowned singer, Ms. Li Yan Ping and local renowned writer Mr. Cheng Zi Yue have come to grace the event.
Early Intervention Programme
The team for special needs children introduced Early Intervention Programme (EIP) on 3rd March 2014, this plan introduced an education programme specially designed for the special needs children who are receiving treatment at Sau Seng Lum Paediatric Rehabilitation Centre, it also meant to prepare the children for their future formal education.
The Great Wall of Buddha - Shrine of the Medicine Buddha
On 8th September 2014, Sau Seng Lum has built The Great Wall of Buddha - Shrine of the Medicine Buddha in the Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Exhibition Centre. This prayer hall displays the gathering of Medicine Buddha, The Seven Medicine Buddhas, Eight Bodhisattva and Twelve protectors in Eastern Lapis Lazuli, it looks stunning and magnificent, in purifying the mind of all.
Shurangama Mantra & Ten Small Mantras
Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple had crafted the sacred Shurangama Mantra & Ten Small Mantras on 10th September 2014. According to the text of sutra, Shurangama mantra is the king of mantra among all the mantras. It has magnificent and auspicious power, once the Shurangama Sutra is recited, it symbolises the continual existence of real dharma. Shurangama Sutra thus said : Once all Buddhas from ten directions chant the Shurangama mantra, all the inner demons and non dharmic teachings will be tamed and pacified.
Great Wall of Buddha ~ Shrine of the Medicine Buddha Officially Open
In February 2015, the Great Wall of Buddha ~ Shrine of the Medicine Buddha was officially opened at Sau Seng Lum (Puchong) Exhibition Centre.
Ground-breaking Ceremony of non-profit Sau Seng Lum International School (Special Education)
On 23rd February 2016, more than 100 guests presided over the grand and significant ground-breaking ceremony for the non-profit Sau Seng Lum International School (Special Education).
Eighty Eight Buddhas
On 3rd February 2018, Sau Seng Lum initiated and installed 88 solemn and dignified statues of Eighty Eight Buddhas. Eighty Eight Buddhas comprised of fifty three Buddhas and thirty five Buddhas. The fifty three Buddhas are the past Buddhas in the Saha World. The thirty five Buddhas are the Buddhas in all the ten directions. These Eighty Eight Buddhas can preside over the repentance by all beings. Therefore all visitors are welcome to the Eighty Eight Buddhas Luminious Hall to chant The Great Eighty Eight Buddha Repentance Script, to sincerely ask Eighty Eight Buddha’s blessing and to repent for whatever wrongs that one has done. It has excellent effects and clears all retributions of unwholesome karma.

Sau Seng Lum Neurological & General Rehabilitation Department and Sau Seng Lum Work Rehabilitation Department officially merged into Sau Seng Lum General Rehabilitation Department on 1st March 2018.
Piling Ceremony Of Non-Profit Sau Seng Lum International School (Special Education)
The non-profit Sau Seng Lum International School (Special Education) held a grand Piling Ceremony on 7th October 2018. More than 300 guests attended the ceremony and witnessed the historical moment.
